Jamshedpur Tense After Clashes Over Alleged Molestation Incident

Jamshedpur:  There has been no fresh incident of violence overnight in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur town where a curfew is in place following clashes on Monday night between two groups over an alleged incident of molestation.

“We are hopeful things will get better soon. The Rapid Action Force has also been deployed in the city apart from the Jharkhand police and the Indo-Tibetan Border Force,” said SN Pradhan, Additional Director General of Jharkhand Police.

According to sources, a young girl was allegedly sexually harassed by a member of a different community, after which angry members from her community assembled near a temple in the city’s Mango area and put up a road blockade.

As tension grew, police intervened to pacify the warring groups.

On Tuesday, the Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad called for a bandh during which protestors clashed with cops. Several people were injured causing injuries on both sides.

“We have initiated a high-level enquiry to the case. No one will be spared. A small incident started the entire violence,’ said minister Saryu Rai, who is also the local MLA.
