Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar wished fellow citizens on the occasion of India’s 69th independence day on Saturday. The retired star was seen interacting with children on the eve of the occasion even as the young brigade of the national team – led by captain Virat Kohli – hoisted the national flag in Sri Lanka where they are playing a Test series.

Tendulkar tweeted his wishes and raved about his interaction with children as part of the ‘Make a Wish’ initiative. “#HappyIndependenceDay to all of us! Spent the eve with young citizens from @MakeAWishIndia,” he wrote on the microblogging site.

Make a Wish initiative seeks to grant the wishes of children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Tendulkar – who is also part of NDTV’s Support My School campaign – said it was indeed a special moment chatting with the children. “They have great hope and positivity. Enjoyed the evening chatting and playing cricket,” he tweeted. “Picking up a bat for these children was special!”

Meanwhile, Kohli and Team India director Ravi Shastri hoisted the Indian flag at Galle where the 1st Test against Sri Lanka is underway. The entire squad joined the two and sang the national anthem.
