Family of Manipur Martyr in Noida Refuses to Cremate His Body

New Delhi:  Angry with the Noida administration, the family of Armyman Jagvir Singh, who died in the militant attack in Manipur on Thursday, has refused to cremate his body.

Family sources said they felt hurt at the way the administration announced a compensation of Rs 30 lakh but no one had come to pay respects to the martyr.


The announcement, they say was made to the media. If they want to give compensation, they must visit us and make the announcement, said one of his relatives, who the residents of Murad Garhi village in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.


Eighteen soldiers from the Army’s 6 Dogra regiment died after being ambushed by militants in Manipur’s Thoubal area on Thursday.

The last rites of six of them who were from Jammu and Kashmir are being held this morning with full military honours.While no politician attended the ceremony, senior army officers and government officials were present.


Another soldier, Ranbir Singh, was cremated in Akhnoor.


The last rites of Rajesh Kumar Chandel, who was among the deceased too, was held in Himachal’s Bilaspur district. More than 500 people attended the ceremony, including several retired armymen from the region.


The militants had ambushed the army convoy on Thursday morning, in what is being described as the worst casualties the Army has suffered in recent years. Sources say 50 militants carried out the attack, using US-made rocket launchers.


The Army has rejected reports that the incident took place due to intelligence failure.
