Mr Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has held up this incident as an example of police inefficiency and the reason why his government – not the union ministry – should be in charge of the city police.
Mr Bassi has said that he will try and tackle “misconceptions” about his force during the meeting. Ahead of the meeting, he called on Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung; Mr Bassi reports directly to Mr Jung, who is the Centre’s representative in Delhi.
The police chief told reporters yesterday: “As a professional police officer it is my duty to remove any misconceptions about policing. I have a good opportunity with the meeting to clear misconception if any.”
The AAP government believes the murder of a teen in west Delhi last week has bolstered its case for the takeover of Delhi Police. At the neighbourhood where the girl stayed, say officials, people had complained to the Chief Minister and his deputy Manish Sisodia about poor policing.
After meeting the girl’s family, Mr Kejriwal had said: “I request Prime Minister Narendra Modi with folded hands that the control of the Delhi Police be handed over to us. He has to run the whole country.”
The bitterness has amplified in the past month with the arrest of two AAP leaders, including former Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar, who has been accused of faking his law degree. AAP accuses the police of hounding its leaders.
In the middle of the row, two Delhi police constables have filed a complaint of “criminal defamation” against the Chief Minister for allegedly using in an interview the slang “thulla,” viewed as a derogatory term for cops.
