BJP vs Congress Over Robert Vadra"s Facebook Post: 10 Developments

New Delhi:  The BJP has moved a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha against Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, saying he “criticised the functioning of Parliament” in a Facebook post earlier this week. BJP lawmakers shouted slogans in the House against Mr Vadra.

Here are 10 developments:

  1. “Parliament begins and so do their petty diversion political tactics… People of India are not fooled. Regret to see India Led by such so called leaders !!” Mr Vadra, 46, had said in his post on Tuesday, attacking the ruling BJP.

  2. The privilege motion moved by the BJP’s chief whip, Arjun Ram Meghwal, alleges that this amounts to “contempt” and a “clear cut case of breach of privilege”, and so should be referred to the privilege committee for “appropriate decision.”

  3. The Congress has lodged a strong complaint with the Speaker asking why BJP lawmakers were allowed to carry and wave placards in the house while raising anti-Vadra slogans. The Opposition party reminded the Speaker that she had reprimanded Congress lawmakers yesterday for carrying placards to the House.

  4. The Speaker has assured the Congress that nothing unparliamentary will be allowed.

  5. Earlier today, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi defended his party’s decision to block Parliament from functioning, stating, “We have said there have to be resignations before any discussion.” The Congress is demanding the urgent removal of three top BJP leaders linked to major controversies.

  6. “Our advice to the PM is this – your credibility is being eroded, listen to the people’s concern. Answer them by speaking on the controversies,” said Rahul Gandhi.

  7. The government has said it is willing to debate with the Opposition, but has rejected the calls for the resignations of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Chief Ministers Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

  8. The stand-off between the Opposition and the government has meant the first two days of Parliament’s 21-day Monsoon Session were squandered with noisy disruptions forcing adjournments. Both Houses witnessed noisy disruptions for a third straight day today. The Rajya Sabha has again been adjourned for the day.

  9. The Congress says that Ms Swaraj and Ms Raje should be removed for “Lalit-Gate”: extending favours to tainted cricket tycoon Lalit Modi. The Left has backed that demand and also one for  the removal of Mr Chouhan, whose government in Madhya Pradesh is engulfed in the Vyapam scam.

  10. Crucial legislation, including the major tax reform of the National Goods and Sales Tax, are pending.
