Furious AAP Takes Litany of Complaints to Home Minister: 10 Developments
New Delhi: Leaders of Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) met Home Minister Rajnath Singh today in the middle of an ugly confrontation with the Delhi Police and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
Here are 10 developments in the story:
- “We spoke on the law and order situation and how there was an attempt to injure Dileep Pandey. We have given video evidence,” senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas told reporters after the meeting.
- AAP leader Dilip Pandey has alleged that a Delhi Police van tried to run him over outside a police station in west Delhi on Tuesday night. “I am shocked that Delhi Police is trying to eliminate me,” he told reporters.
- Delhi Police Chief BS Bassi said he would have the allegation investigated but added that he has “never heard such a complaint in my life.”
- Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP have also targeted the police over the brutal murder of a 19-year-old girl in west Delhi last week; she was stabbed multiple times, allegedly because she had protested against harassment.
- Mr Kejriwal has made the murder the focal point of his argument that the Delhi Police should be under the control of the city government, not the Centre.
- Since it took power in February, AAP has campaigned for the transfer of important departments that are not under the Delhi Government’s control, including law and order, police and land.
- AAP’s battle with police is another fallout of its bitter power struggle with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
- In the latest instalment of the row, Mr Jung has cancelled the appointment of Swati Maliwal, the wife of an AAP leader, as the new chief of the Delhi Commission for Women.
- The appointment of Swati Maliwal, 30, is “in breach of rules and procedures” and “had no legal sanctity”, Mr Jung said in his letter. He also said that the “constitutionally valid and consistent definition of ‘Government’ is the Lieutenant Governor.”
- Swati Maliwal has alleged that on the Lieutenant Governor’s orders, she was asked to stay away from her new office. “My office has been locked, my nameplate removed and I have been asked not to sign on files,” she told NDTV.
