Jalna Teen Used as Bait Twice to Trap Rape Accused, Admits Top Cop

Mumbai:  The local police in Maharashtra’s Jalna had used a teenage rape survivor twice as bait to trap the perpetrators. Both times they drew a blank and the second time, the teen allegedly got raped again, a senior police officer has admitted.

The accused were finally arrested from a railway station and they have confessed to the crime, said Vishwas Patil, Inspector General of Police, Aurangabad, who had taken part in their interrogation.

“We tried to lay a trap on the July 8, but it failed. The police vehicles were following too closely,” said Mr Patil. On July 9 again, an attempt was made to lay a trap. That failed too, and the girl was “put through the injustice” again, he said.

“It is wrong to use a victim, especially a minor victim, as bait,” Mr Patil added.

Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Ejjapwar, who had been allegedly involved in the botched up operation, has been suspended for dereliction of duty. An inquiry is on and a report on his involvement is expected within 20 days.

The government, though, has been guarded in its response. “The facts of the case are different. The Superintendent of Police will clarify soon,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said today.

The teenager was allegedly raped at knife-point for the first time on July 7, when she had gone to meet a male friend whom she had met on Facebook. The accused even shot a video of the act on her cellphone, with which they allegedly tried to threaten and blackmail her.

On July 9, she was allegedly raped again, when the police sent her as bait to the same spot.

Police officers investigating the case, however, claim that on July 9, when the trap was to be executed, the girl had left to meet the accused without informing them.

Police sources also say the preliminary medical reports have failed to establish the first rape. Wait is now on for detailed reports.
