30-year-old Pankaj Pahade was serving a life term after being convicted of murder.
A whole hour after his escape, prison officials realized that he was missing during the head count done before prisoners return to the barracks.
Jail officials panicked and scanned CCTV footage only to realise that the scrawny figure in white climbing off the high wall was their convict Pankaj. He was seen climbing one wall, balancing precariously on another and partly dragging himself on his way to freedom.
The police were immediately informed but Pankaj has not been traced yet.
A security constable has been blamed for not being vigil enough.
“The constable on duty is at fault as he was not at this post, because of which Pankaj could escape. We have informed the police and they are looking for him,” said Amit Mishra, Jail Superintendent.
Pankaj was transferred from a jail in Chhindwara six months ago.
