Sheena Bora, who was Indrani Mukherjea’s daughter from a previous marriage, was murdered in 2012 and her body was dumped in the forests of Raigad, 84 km from Mumbai. On Tuesday, Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria questioned Ms Mukherjea for hours and then arrested her.
Confessing that he found the developments “very hard to process,” Peter Mukherjea told NDTV that his wife did not approve of Sheena’s relationship with his son Rahul. He also said he had been given to believe that Sheena had been sent to the US for further studies.
“I feel like I have been kept in the dark about major parts of my marriage…I never took the rumours seriously when I heard them four years ago, but now it is coming to me from credible sources, the police,” Mr Mukherjea said, asserting that he was available to the police for all assistance.
Finding out that Sheena was his wife’s daughter was a “very, very disturbing piece of the puzzle,” he said.
He admitted that he and Indrani were both unhappy about Sheena’s affair with his son. “They were both adults so they carried on. When I was told that Sheena was sent off to the US, I felt a sense of relief,” Mr Mukherjea said.
Sheena was said to be 24 when she was killed. The police say no missing complaint was filed by Ms Mukherjea when her daughter disappeared.
Ms Mukherjea’s role in the murder was allegedly revealed by her driver, who was arrested a few days ago on a tip-off. He reportedly directed the police to the spot where the remains of Sheena Bora’s body were found.
Sheena and her brother were reportedly raised by their grandparents in Guwahati. After college, Sheena had started living and working in Mumbai.
