The 22-year-old was the lone passenger in the women’s only compartment of a suburban train on Thursday night in South Mumbai when a man entered the area and tried to overpower her.
Though it is mandatory, there were no security personnel on duty in the compartment for women commuters, a railway official admitted.
The police said when she fought back and tried to scream for help, he got more aggressive.
As the train slowed down while approaching the next station, the assaulter jumped out of the compartment from the moving train and managed to escape.
CCTV footage of the man, reportedly seen in a blue t-shirt and red shorts, is being scrutinized by the police in an attempt to identify and locate him.
