AAP Leader Somnath Bharti Booked for Domestic Violence

AAP Leader Somnath Bharti Booked for Domestic Violence

Former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti

AAP leader and former Delhi minister Somnath Bharti has been booked for domestic violence on a complaint filed by his estranged wife.

In June, Mr Bharti’s wife Lipika Mitra, 40, had complained to the police and the Delhi Commission for Women that she was physically and mentally abused and financially deprived. Mr Bharti had claimed that she filed a false complaint as she wanted him to leave his mother and settle abroad. He had also dismissed her charges as politically motivated.

Last month, Mr Bharti ignited another controversy by saying that “beautiful women” will feel safer if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government takes over policing in the capital.

“I am fully confident that if Delhi government is given full control (over security), beautiful women will be able to go out even after midnight without any fear,” Mr Bharti, an AAP lawmaker, said during a discussion in the Delhi assembly on crimes against women.

The assembly Speaker had expunged the word “beautiful,” saying it appeared inappropriate in the circumstances.

Somnath Bharti’s brief stint as law minister was an embarrassment for the previous 49-day Arvind Kejriwal government. His midnight raid targeting African women at a south Delhi colony badly dented the party’s image.
