PM Modi Holds Summit With G4 Leaders: Highlights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting a summit with G4 leaders.




Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a special summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. The four leaders form what is known as the G-4 group – countries which back each other’s bid for permanent seats at the UN Security Council, a powerful world body. India is making a strong bid for a permanent seat in an expanded Security Council.

Here are the highlights of the meeting:


  • I am delighted to welcome you all.

  • I especially want to thank PM Shinzo Abe who has just arrived in the US.

  • The subject for reforms in the UN Security Council has been the focus of global attention for decades.

  • Unfortunately there has been no progress so far.

  • The reforms of the UN Security Council within a fixed timeframe has become urgent and important task.

  • Our group of four countries, G4 came together in 2004 bound by our shared commitment to global peace in prosperity.

  • Climate change and terrorism are new concerns.

  • Cyber space are new frontiers of our challenges and opportunities.
